Small Farm Information Network
Description: The SSFIN is a communications network to put Midwestern producers on small, sustainable farms in touch with one another - and potentially help them to better understand their markets. - has opened its website to farmers in 12 states. The Missouri Alternatives Center (MAC) on the University of Missouri campus is spearheading the network. Although much of the information will come from government agencies, universities and not-for-profit corporations, Kelly said, "not all of it is going to be research-based information. How could it be when the goal is to present alternatives that are new and creative and can fit into a niche market?" Producers, market consultants and other are encouraged to add their experiences and observations, she said. "The amount of information will increase as people become more familiar with it. If they have a piece of information, they can email it to me and have it added." Links to Kelly and contact persons in the other 11 states are at the site, she added. Including information on the website does not constitute an endorsement, Kelly hastened to add. "The aim is to give people a chance to look at the information that is out there. Some farmers want to be homesteaders, make their own cheese and things along that line. A lot of the existing research doesn't address the needs of that clientele." Debi Kelly serves as the contact for the SSFIN.
